The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has released its U.S. Winter Outlook, which outlines valuable insights into what we can expect for the 2023-2024 winter season.

El Nino has made its return for the first time in four years and will have a major influence on temperatures, precipitation levels, and drought patterns. Let’s take a closer look at what we can expect from the weather this winter.

Temperature: Warmer Times Ahead

If you're not a fan of the cold, you're in for a treat. NOAA suggests that El Nino will bring warmer-than-average temperatures to the northern part of the United States. So, places like Alaska, the Pacific Northwest, and northern New England can expect milder winters than what those regions typically experience.

From the south-central Rockies to the southern Plains states, winter temperatures are expected to remain at historically normal levels for the season. As for the rest of the United States, it's a bit of a mixed bag with equal chances of temperatures either below, near, or above-average than usual.

Precipitation: Prepare for Wet (and Dry) Spells

When it comes to rain and snow, things can get interesting. From December through February, there is more rain and snow expected across northern Alaska, parts of the West, the southern Plains, Southeast, Gulf Coast, and lower mid-Atlantic.

In contrast, some parts of the northern Rockies and the central Great Lakes region, especially Michigan and northern Ohio and Indiana, are expected to be drier than usual.

Drought: A Mixed Picture

Drought has been a concern in various parts of the United States, but El Nino brings hope. Drought conditions in the Southeast, the Gulf Coast (including the lower Mississippi Valley), and Texas are forecasted to improve, thanks to more rain on the horizon.

The northern Rockies, northern Great Plains, and parts of the desert Southwest may still face drought. There's even a chance of drought in the interior Pacific Northwest, where it might be drier than usual, and Hawaii is also expected to continue facing drier than usual conditions.
