The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced that this summer is poised to be the worst hurricane season on record, predicting above-normal hurricane activity across the Atlantic basin.

NOAA's Prediction for 2024

NOAA's recent forecast includes a higher-than-average number of named storms (winds of 39 MPH or more, hurricanes (winds up to 74 MPH), and major hurricanes with winds up to 111 MPH or more, across the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf Coast

NOAA's scientists attribute this escalation to a combination of factors, including unusually warm ocean temperatures and favorable atmospheric conditions that promote storm development.

"Severe weather and emergencies can happen at any moment, which is why individuals and communities need to be prepared today," said FEMA Deputy Administrator Erik A. Hooks. "Already, we are seeing storms move across the country that can bring additional hazards like tornadoes, flooding and hail. Taking a proactive approach to our increasingly challenging climate landscape today can make a difference in how people can recover tomorrow." —NOAA
